Rockin it

We have been sheet rocking all week. Here is the greenhouse almost done.

Eric stands by one of his arched doorways.

Rooms start to take shape as the sheetrock goes in.

If you come to visit us this will probably be your room.

Courtyard wall

We use leftover straw bales to build a courtyard wall. In the foreground the angle iron will hold the door jambs for the gate.

Here the wall is partially laid out as we decide how high to go 2 bales? 3bales? what do you think?

Buttoning up

Dan is up in the trusses blowing cellulose insulation above the ceiling.

After the last of the insulation is blown in we finish installing the tongue & groove ceiling.

Through the roof

I cut a hole in the roof and Random builds up the top of the fireplace and the chimney.

After the chimney they built the banco or seat of the fireplace. A stone will go on top of this when it is finished.

Aaron, the guy who hauls the cement and cinder blocks and keeps the workplace fun, poses in front of his work.

Inside finish

We are now working on the inside finishes, here the tongue in groove ceiling is installed in the office.

Stuart from the insulation company prepares the walls for insulation. He is stapling a reinforced membrane on the walls. The insulation is a blown in cellulose. This is made of recycled paper that is treated with a non toxic fire retardant.

Screened Pourch

Patrick O'Brien co-owner of The Salamander Co. shows up to work on the screened porch. It will be made of rough cut cedar.

Pat & Ivy work on the railing.

We get it framed up and put on the roof rafters.

Kiva Fireplace

Mark Saxe arrives to lay out the Kiva fireplace. In addition to building fireplaces Mark does stone caving and teaches classes in stone work. He can be found at saxstonecarving.com

Random, one of Mark's employees shows the fireplace layout to Suzie

The fire box is built in one day.

The first portion of the fireplace is constructed by the second day.
